How to make keto coffee

  1. Brew coffee using your favorite beans or coffee grounds.
  2. Pour coffee into a blender or your mug.
  3. Add butter and MCT oil.
  4. Blend or use a handheld frothing device to mix until a frothy head forms.

What is keto coffee

There are three key ingredients that go into making the perfect cup of keto coffee.

  • Coffee – You can use whole beans, ground coffee or instant coffee. Decaf, caffeinated coffee or espresso. Although the coffee bean doesn’t really matter: ideally, look for beans with minimal mold or mycotoxins (*) as they may diminish the full benefit if you are sensitive to molds.
  • Butter – Use unsalted or salted butter – the choice is yours and depends on your taste preference. The butter adds creaminess and gives a frothy head similar to a latte.
  • MCT oil – Also known as Medium Chain Triglyceride. These are used as immediate fuel by the body to provide energy, focus and better cognition.

  • Possible benefits of bulletproof coffee

Putting butter and/or MCT oil in your coffee doesn’t just add a frothy creaminess, there are many other benefits of bulletproof coffee.

    Benefits of grass fed butter

Ideally, you want to add butter from a pasture raised cow (aka grass fed butter). Butter made from this type of animal has a higher omega 3 fatty acid content and vitamin k2 (which only comes from grass fed animals).

Look for packaging that states “pasture-raised” or “from grass fed cows”. If all else fails, you can make your own out of cream from grass fed cows.

    What Is MCT oil?

MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides and is sourced from coconut oil or palm oil.

A medium chain fatty acid is about 8-10 carbons in length in a fatty acid chain, called C8 & C10. MCT oils are immediately used as fuel for someone on the keto diet as there is not much digestion that takes place when you consume it.

    Upgraded coffee

Keto Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (Upgraded) (13)

Besides the basics, many people like to add in a few other ingredients into their butter coffees to make it specific to their tastes. This is ideal for those who need to have coffee creamer in their keto coffee.

    These include:

    • collagen powder
    • adaptogens
    • Himalayan salt
    • stevia or other sweeteners
    • sugar free coffee syrups aka skinny syrups
    • heavy cream
    • half and half
    • cinnamon
    • protein powder
    • nut milks – almond milk, coconut milk

Ways to people enjoy this keto coffee recipe

“I don’t know if mine counts as bulletproof but I’m hooked. 1 tbsp mct oil, 1 tbsp vanilla cinnamon skinny syrup, 1 tbsp of heavy whipping cream, a few stevia drops, froth it all together and sprinkle cinnamon on top.”

    ➥ from YouTube subscriber @Christina-tp4mo

“I add 2 tbsp salted butter, 2 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tbsp collagen peptides and of course coffee with a tad of Stevia.”

Blender vs frother for bulletproof coffee

Keto Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (Upgraded) (14)

I prefer to use a blender rather than a frother for making keto bulletproof coffee since it produces a very frothy and creamy cup of coffee. It tastes like you added keto coffee creamer, like heavy cream, but you didn’t!

However, a milk frother is nice to have when you don’t have access to a blender or you are on the go. Handheld milk frothers are battery operated and don’t require being plugged in to run.

Why do people put butter in coffee?

Keto Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (Upgraded) (15)

People on the keto diet love to put butter in their coffee.

Besides providing a dose of healthy fats, adding butter makes the coffee super creamy and frothy without having to add milk or a ton of cream. It’s like having a coffeehouse latte without all the dairy.

So if you are someone that likes extra foam on your coffee without finding a keto coffee creamer, drinking butter coffee is the way to go.

    Espresso vs regular coffee

Keto Bulletproof Coffee Recipe (Upgraded) (16)

Espresso is generally a smaller, more concentrated coffee. When brewed, espresso can develop a creamy foam on top called the crema. It’s like having a frothy bulletproof coffee without using cream, butter or MCT oil and it makes the best keto coffee recipe. Of course, you can still add these items to your morning espresso in order to achieve a creamy, richer espresso.

If you are looking for a coffee that is less acidic than regular coffee, try Golden Ratio. It is so smooth and comes in different flavors. I love to enjoy mine as a bulletproof coffee or just with a splash of cream.

    Iced keto coffee

Whether the weather is warm or you just prefer cold coffee over hot, you can easily turn this recipe into an iced keto coffee.

Simple pour the hot coffee blend (with butter and MCT) over ice and stir to mix. If you fear this will dilute your coffee, you can make cold brew!

    Keto Bulletproof Coffee: FAQS

    What is in bulletproof coffee?

Bulletproof coffee is made from high quality beans (ideally mycotoxin free), butter and MCT oil. When blended or mixed with a handheld frother, it is creamy and frothy like a latte.

Can you drink bulletproof coffee everyday?

It's perfectly fine to drink bulletproof coffee everyday as long as you are using it as a meal replacement. Adding butter and/or MCT oil to coffee adds a lot of calories and fat to your coffee. It can be enough for one meal's worth of calories. Many people find that they aren't hungry regardless after enjoying a cup of bulletproof coffee. One cup can last you until lunch or your next meal.

Does bulletproof coffee break a fast?

That depends on who you ask and how strict your fast is. Generally, any type of food consumed that will increase insulin will break your fast. Since small amounts of insulin are released when you eat anything, even fat, the butter in coffee can break your fast.

Is keto coffee meant to be a meal replacement?

Depending on how many cups you have and because bullet proof coffee is so caloric dense, most people drink their buttered coffee as a meal - usually as their morning coffee.

How do you order keto coffee at a coffee shop?

Some boutique coffeehouses are starting to carry butter and MCT oil so you can ask the barista to make you bulletproof coffee. Starbucks does have butter for their pastries. You could ask for a packet of butter and make your own with your favorite pour over.
