Marvin Underwood. Ryals, who claims to be a Jeho-var's Witness preacher, is charged with failure to report for induction into military service and refusal to submit to a physical examination as required by the act.

Lieutenant Colonel Clifford Hatcher, of State Selective Service headquartes, testified in the opening-day trial yesterday that Ryals was not classified as a minister because he told draft officials he worked a major portion of each day at the paper company and served as a minister only a few hours after work each day. Ryals was then classified as a conscientious objector, Colonel Hatcher said. Hal Lindsay, attorney representing Ryals, pointed out before the jury that Ryals was originally classified as a conscientious objector by his local draft board, and appealed to the state board, which affirmed the local board's classification. Ryals then appealed to the President's appeal board, which held that he was a minister and entitled to a 4-D classification. However, that classification was not given him by tlje local board, Lindsay said.

Ryals is one of 12 men. all claiming to be Jehovah's Witness preachers, scheduled to be tried this week on charges of violation of the selective service and training act. Dr. Lamons Confers On Kiwanis Objectives Kiwanis objectives for 1944 were discussed by O. E.

Dr. Lamons conferred with other members of the Chicago staff of Kiwanis International which now has, according to Peterson.
